Prison should be one of the worst situations anyone would want to find themselves in, but is that true for South African prisons?
A recent video circulating on social media has sparked outrage and debate.

“Hello, haters, you put us in prison, and you think we are suffering? No, my brother, we are doing extremely fine. Look how happy we are,” the man says, while other prisoners nod in agreement.
Public Outrage
The video has left many social media users outraged.
People are shocked and angered by the seemingly comfortable conditions and privileges afforded to prisoners in South Africa.

Official Response
Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo responded to the video, expressing the department’s dismay.
“The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) is appalled by the video making rounds on social media by inmate Bornface Banks,” said Nxumalo.

According to the DCS, Banks’ claims are false. Prisoners are not allowed to possess cellphones or any other contraband devices. However, Nxumalo admitted that inmates often manage to get their hands on cellphones through corruption or smuggling.
The cellphone used in the video has since been confiscated, and Banks will face disciplinary processes. “Mobile phones are defined as contraband in correctional centres; hence, illegal access and usage is a punishable offence,” Nxumalo emphasized.
The inmate in question is a Zimbabwean national currently held at Goodwood Correctional Centre in Cape Town for alleged kidnapping.
