JOHANNESBURG – A suspect is expected to appear at the Germiston Magistrates Court in Johannesburg on Monday morning for his alleged involvement in the murder of former South African professional heavyweight boxer, Mark Strydom.

Strydom, aged 54, was shot dead outside Grand Slam Diner on Saturday night following a heated altercation. The incident occurred in Edenvale, a suburb on the East Rand of Johannesburg.

Dispute and Shooting

According to eyewitnesses, the altercation began between Strydom and a woman believed to be his girlfriend.

The dispute escalated when an onlooker attempted to intervene.

Strydom, who was known by his nickname ‘Striker,’ reportedly fired at least two shots into the air during the confrontation.

Police Investigation

Gauteng police spokesperson Noxolo Kweza confirmed that a murder investigation is underway.

“I can confirm that police in Edenvale are investigating a murder docket after a 54-year-old man was shot and killed at a sports bar,” said Kweza.

The motive for the shooting remains unclear at this stage of the investigation.
