The Limpopo Education Department has launched an investigation after a Grade 10 learner gave birth in a toilet at Molautsi Secondary School in Bloodriver, outside Polokwane.

The 16-year-old delivered her baby on the school premises without any assistance. Her mother revealed she was seven months pregnant.

Reports indicate a high rate of pregnant learners at the school over the years.

Suzan Xithlelani from the Limpopo Department of Education stated the investigation will determine if the school was aware of the student’s pregnancy.

“We heard about the incident at Molautsi Secondary School. The issue is that the school did not notify the department about the pregnant learner.

Normally, they should input this information into the School Administration Management System (SAMS) so we are aware of pregnant learners.

Without SAMS and EMIS, we are not informed. The department is now checking if any educators were aware,” said Xithlelani.
