The internet is buzzing with a heated debate on whether hiring a Sotho domestic helper is advisable.

The conversation was sparked by a woman on Twitter (X) who questioned the topic, prompting many to share their opinions—most of which were negative.

Here are some of the reasons people gave.

A user shared a story @Pearlson_L : “My colleague told me about this one helper. She controlled the remote and watched whatever she wanted. If she wanted to step out, she paused the show and resumed it later. They eventually tried to let her go, but she refused to leave.”

Another user, Babarahisi_X, recounted a troubling experience: “My phone was malfunctioning, so I asked our helper from Lesotho to use hers. When she handed it to me, it was on the gallery, and I found photos of my mother’s payslips, ID, and other important documents. A month after we fired her, we got burgled.”

Ms Yoli shared her story: “Mine used to wear skimpy clothes and preferred talking to my husband over me. She even suggested we do ‘mogodisano’ while I was paying her salary!”

Another comment from shukrani said, “Apparently, they are not good people and have caused separations in marriages.”

Tebogo Mokwena added, “They steal. My brother-in-law had a very clean and hard-working woman, but she kept stealing until he fired her.”

A video was also shared showing a couple who hired an elderly Sotho house helper. When they searched her bag, they found some muthi (traditional medicine), her boss’s underwear, and other suspicious items.

However, not all feedback was negative. Some users shared their positive experiences, indicating that the issue might not be as widespread as it seems.
