It’s easy to assume that growing up with a celebrity mother means a life of luxury and ease, but the reality for Nothando Mabuza and Nongelo Chiume, children of the late Connie Chiume, has been anything but glamorous.
Social media often paints a rosy picture of fame, leading many to believe that the children of celebrities have it all.
However, Nothando and Nongelo have shared their real-life struggles, proving that their experiences were far from perfect.
In an interview with Drum magazine, Nothando opened up about the bullying she endured throughout her school years.
She recounted a painful incident where she was attacked by seven girls, an experience so traumatic it forced her to switch schools.
This constant scrutiny and judgment over her family background made it difficult for Nothando to form genuine friendships.
Even in university, she struggled with people befriending her for the wrong reasons, often using her connection to gain access to exclusive events.
“I was beaten by seven girls because of who my mom was, and I had to change high schools. Making friends and being accepted was always a challenge. People were always watching me—what I was wearing, if my hair wasn’t done, they’d wonder if something was wrong at home,” Nothando shared.
Nongelo, too, faced his own set of challenges in the entertainment industry, where people often assumed his success was handed to him by his mother. He emphasized that many fail to realize the hard work and hustle that go into earning opportunities on their own.
The Chiume family recently took to Instagram to express their heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming support they’ve received following the passing of their beloved mother, Connie.
They shared their appreciation for the doctors and nursing staff who cared for Connie during her final days. The family promised to share details about the funeral and memorial services on Connie’s social media platforms.
