Home Affairs has uncovered prima facie evidence suggesting that the mother of Miss SA contestant Chidimma Adetshina might have committed identity theft.

Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber made the announcement on Wednesday.

This revelation comes after many South Africans questioned Adetshina’s identity due to her Nigerian surname.

Investigations revealed that her father is allegedly Nigerian, while her mother is believed to be from Mozambique.

In a detailed statement, Schreiber mentioned that an innocent South African mother had her identity stolen as part of the alleged fraud by Adetshina’s mother.

The department is now expanding its investigation to identify any officials involved in the scheme.

“The department is obtaining legal advice on the implications of the alleged fraudulent activity on Adetshina’s citizenship status. Upon the completion of the investigation, Home Affairs intends to press criminal charges,” Schreiber stated.

He also noted that this alleged fraud, committed 23 years ago, underscores the urgent need for digital modernization of Home Affairs applications.

The case highlights why the department blocks certain duplicate IDs and stresses the importance of handling court-ordered unblocking of these documents with caution.

“Home Affairs is committed to restoring and upholding the rule of law while protecting the rights of all parties involved,” Schreiber added.

Additionally, the Patriotic Alliance (PA) has launched its own investigation, stating that Adetshina was not an SA Ambassador.
