The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have called for the immediate removal of security companies deployed in Alexandra following the death of their ward councillor, Moshe Mphahlele, during a protest on Sunday.

Mphahlele tragically died after being caught in crossfire while police and security guards were dispersing a crowd protesting the eviction of residents who had illegally occupied municipal container flats.

The EFF claims that the presence of these security companies could compromise the crime scene, where they are allegedly involved.

The party is also demanding the suspension of all Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department officials connected to the incident, criticizing their failure to manage the situation and protect the people.

EFF leader Julius Malema, who visited the site of the shooting, expressed anger at the security guards hiding their faces and insisted they be removed, accusing them of contaminating the scene and concealing evidence.

A murder investigation has been launched, but no arrests have been made. Malema has vowed to ensure justice for Mphahlele, promising to hold those responsible accountable.

The EFF also called on the City of Johannesburg and the Gauteng Department of Human Settlements to allocate the unused container units, originally built during COVID-19, to the residents of Alexandra in honor of Mphahlele’s legacy.

The party plans to push for the immediate allocation of these units to the community, emphasizing that the people of Alexandra have long been promised land and housing, but continue to live in overcrowded and dire conditions.

The EFF intends to introduce a motion in the City of Johannesburg council to demand swift action in fulfilling these promises.
